• It is indicated in the Qur’an that the Prophet Moses’ (as) people demanded cucumber, garlic and onions. “Do you want to replace what is better with what is inferior?” Allah says [in the Qur’an].  It is very unpleasant for a Muslim to smell of garlic or his hearth and home to smell of garlic and onion. Making the whole area of town smell of onion. It is obviously a most bad and disturbing smell. It is senseless to insist on recommending it or getting people to eat it and going and talking in people’s faces in that way. It is important to frequently rinse one’s mouth and keep it clean when fasting. Muslims must smell very fragrant. They regard the mouth’s unpleasant odor as something sacred. No foul smell can be sacred. Filth cannot be sacred. Ugliness cannot be sacred. Allah has provided the means, and it is very simple. But they invite Muslims to the evening Ramadan meal in order to get them to eat foul-smelling foods. For instance, they sit people down and feed them foods that smell of garlic. They eat that and then go out and make life unpleasant for everyone there. Their socks stink, and their mouths stink and the food they eat stinks. And this happens as if it is a feature of a specific section of society. They use a language that suggests they never realize. How can you not realize you are offending the person opposite you? Muslims must be very high quality, and be rational, immaculate and deep-thinking. Everything about them must be immaculate. Their food and drink, the way they go to bed and get up, everything must be immaculate. Their language must be immaculate. Muslims must lead exemplary lives. They depict filth as a sign of faithfulness. They depict filthy clothes, filthy eating habits and filthy behavior as signs of faithfulness. That is how unbelievers behave. Allah says “Say: These are for the believers in the life of this world, purely (theirs) on the resurrection day” in one verse. Because disbelief also enjoys the blessings of this world. But the hereafter belongs to you alone, He says. But Allah does not say that this world is also for you alone. “Purely (theirs) on the resurrection day” He says, insha’Allah.

• (About those who are upset by talk of Islamic Union, the way of the Mahdi and Turkish-Islamic Union)

They describe how garlic and onion are prepared. They describe the benefits of rice and how long one’s trousers should be. But I speak of Islamic Union. I speak of the greatest religious obligation. Bediüzzaman also says, “it is the greatest religious obligation.” Whichever page of the Qur’an you open up, it speaks of Islamic Union. With their gracious permission, I alone speak of Islamic Union and Turkish-Islamic Union.

Allah explicitly tells us in the Qur’an not to fast if we are sick. It is unlawful for a sick person to fast. It is a religious obligation for him not to fast. Because then he is obeying Allah’s command. That means merit. In other words, the sick person acquires merit by not fasting. So those brothers of ours who are seriously ill should not even think about fasting. People with severe gastric diseases, kidney diseases, blood pressure diseases and who have to take medicines all the time must not fast. If they do, that is unlawful. You must seek medical advice. All right, if a few doctors say there is no problem with fasting, then that is fine. But if he says you must not fast, then you have a religious obligation not to.

This report is very significant. The presence of the Qur’an in the American Army, Islamic accounts being given, the language of followers of Islam and describing the invalidity of Darwinism and materialism are all marvelous things. The demand there was wonderful. These are very high-ranking people. In that respect it is also highly significant. It was amazing how they sent a medal and how they gave permission for the conference to be held. A conference being held in a military facility. They made a request, saying come and talk to us. That can only be explained by the coming of Jesus the Messiah. Someone must have warned them. Someone must have given the order. Someone must be guiding them. Who is that? There is something marvelous here. The medal is an expression of their joy. They proffered it as a compliment, an expression of love and respect.

One must approach matters with love and affection. The savagery and barbarity of the dajjal (antichrist) are unbelievable. But these are fine people and we must love them and be their friends. We must describe the way of Muhammad with love. Islam and the Qur’an are most lovely. The Qur’an bestows the most lovely and luxurious form on life. It bestows the most select life on us. The Qur’an produces first-class people. It produces excellent, rational, high-quality, honest, sincere, helpful and loving people who yearn to enjoy reason, art, science and beauty. That is a characteristic of the Qur’an. It is a system that gives rise to a super high-quality life. It is a system made by Allah.

• (About a report headed “Wearied by the European Union, Turkey has decided to establish an Ottoman Union.”)

The Ottoman Empire came and went at a certain time. There is no question of a new Ottoman Empire. But Islamic Union is something else, Turkish-Islamic Union is something else. It means Muslims being united. Every state will remain separate and independent and there will be no interference with their regimes. Everyone will be free in internal and external affairs. This is a bond of love and brotherhood. The ottoman political structure was rather different. It had a policy of conquest. It appeared to have political dominion, but it never assimilated people. It never touched their religions or languages. And there will be no interference under Turkish-Islamic Union. It will be based on love, brotherhood and friendship. On mutual aid. It is a bond of profound love. Imagine a great religious scholar. Think how scrupulous he will be toward his children and spouse and mother. This will be the same. Islamic Union, Turkish-Islamic Union, is like a father, deeply attached to his family, watching over and protecting his children. Can a person interfere with his children? They come and go as they wish, and study at school and he never interferes with them, but when the time comes he will protect them. That is Islamic Union, insha’Allah.
